To "circuit" and "patch" the lights you need to understand and use distribution and control equipment. You probably will never have to replace an LED lighting engine in a stage light, but if you do.
This process will soon disappear as incandescent lamps are replaced by light emitting diodes. Be careful when dismantling lights, and always restore all the fixture parts as you found them. When you have a burnt out lamp, take it out of the light, carry it with you to the lamp stock, and replace it with an identical lamp: there are hundreds of varieties. Don't overtighten.Ĭhanging an incandescent lamp: never touch an incandescent stagelight lamp with your bare fingers (the dirt and oil from your hand causes them to burn out sooner). When finished, lock the pan, tilt, barrel, and any other lockable adjustments. Once the light is correctly pointed, adjust size of beam and hardness of edge as desired. To adjust a fresnel, start with the smallest possible spot, for an ellipsoidal start with the hardest possible edge - this way its easy to find the centre of the light. The electricians activate the fixture(s) intended to light that area of the stage, and adjust them so that the centre of the blob of light is on the head and shoulders of the stand-in at each location.
During a lighting focus the lighting designer (or assistant) stands onstage in each area where performers will perform. The lighting designer decides in advance where the lights are supposed to point. To "focus the lights" means to turn them on one by one, and aim each one.

Install framed color (gel in cardboard or metal frames) if specified. Plug them in and record the (circuit) number of each light. After hanging, aim them approximately where they are supposed to point, make sure that they are right side up (adjusted so that a piece of gel - a colored plastic filter - will not fall out of the gel frame clips), and pull any shutters open. To "hang the lights" means: clamp them to the pipes in the theatre according to the light plot. Before stage lights can be used they must be hung, circuited, patched, and focused.
